Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov once again mentioned Kosovo with a tendency to compare it to Ukraine.
He addressed the Cabinet of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and called on them to “read the Charter of this organization in its entirety, and not just the part that he wants to highlight in the context of the Ukrainian crisis regarding territory, integrity and the right to right Nations for self-determination”.
Lavrov rebuffed Western demands for Ukraine to remain within its 1991 borders and tried to present this as an example of Kosovo at the International Symposium “Building the Future”.
“When Western countries declared Kosovo independent in 2008, no one argued about it, and the United Nations International Court of Justice concluded that the consent of the central authorities is not required at all when a part of the country unilaterally decides on its independence,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov even spoke about Kosovo during a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, on the sidelines of the Second International Conference on Eurasian Security in Minsk, continuing the narrative started by Serbia that Serbs in Kosovo are being “persecuted”.
“During the discussion on the situation in the Balkans, particular attention was paid to Kosovo, especially in view of the ongoing anti-Serb repression by the authorities in Pristina. Both sides emphasized the importance of compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1244 as a basic prerequisite for a just solution to the Kosovo crisis and for ensuring peace and stability in the Balkan region. Other topical issues of international politics were also discussed,” the Russian ministry said afterwards./TheGeopost/
