Today, the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo are exercising their right to vote in the first regular parliamentary elections since the declaration of independence in 2008. According to data from the Central Election Commission, the number of citizens with the right to vote is 1 million 970 thousand 944 voters. For the first time, more than 125 thousand young people are participating in the elections.
Also, 104 thousand 924 citizens have registered to vote abroad, and the diaspora has the opportunity to cast their vote through diplomatic missions. Voting by mail began on January 9. In these elections, 28 political entities are competing, with a total of 1280 candidates for deputies.
Unlike previous elections, the electoral silence will last only during the 12 hours of voting, which starts at 7:00 in the morning and ends at 19:00 in the evening. There will be a total of 941 polling stations, of which 903 are for regular voting with 2,533 polling stations, while 38 centers are for conditional voting (one for each municipality), with a total of 56 polling stations.
According to the new law on general elections, the counting of ballots will be carried out in two phases: in the first phase, ballots for political entities will be counted, while one day after the elections, the counting of the remaining part for candidates for deputies will begin. For the first time, citizens will be able to vote for ten candidates for deputies.
The parliamentary elections will be monitored by over 100 European Union observers.
