“We stand with Ukraine”, “Peace for Ukraine” and “The world has seen enough wars” were some of the slogans of the solidarity protest with the Ukrainian people, which was held on Monday in Pristina.
Ukraine has been under Russian occupation since February 24.
According to the United Nations, hundreds of people have been killed and over 1.5 million displaced.
The protest in Pristina, which was organized by several non-governmental organizations, was attended by citizens, but also representatives of Kosovo institutions and diplomats accredited in Pristina.
Dajana Berisha, director of the Forum for Civic Initiatives, said that the people of Kosovo know the difficulties that the Ukrainian people are going through.
She said that this protest is to show Kosovo’s alignment with Western and democratic values.
“We are here today – through a symbolic gesture – to express the solidarity of Kosovo in the human, institutional, NGO level, towards the people of Ukraine”, said Berisha.
Also present at the protest was the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani. She said events in Ukraine bring back memories of the war in Kosovo in the late 1990s.
Osmani said that Kosovo has expressed its readiness to host Ukrainian journalists and citizens, within its capacities.
“Kosovo has shown readiness to provide support, but also hospitality for journalists in Kosovo. “Everything that is in our hands, we have done and we will continue to do it, within our capacities”, said Osmani.
Authorities in Kosovo have announced that they can house 20 Ukrainian journalists for a period of six months, enabling them to work from Kosovo.
The Kosovo government has allocated 150,000 euros to cover journalists’ expenses, but it is not yet known when they will arrive.
Also, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora in Kosovo has announced that it will provide shelter to the families of Ukrainian soldiers serving in Kosovo in the framework of the NATO peacekeeping mission, KFOR.
40 KFOR soldiers serve in the KFOR mission.
The MFA has said it will submit a request to the Government to prepare for the reception of 5,000 Ukrainian refugees.
Kosovo has also joined US and European Union sanctions against Russia.
