“We are monitoring the situation and working closely with leaders in Belgrade and Pristina, as well as with our international partners, to maintain a safe and secure environment for all the people of Kosovo”, the KFOR mission in Kosovo said tonight, following the decision of the Serbs from the North to leave the institutions and the rise of new tensions.
They called on all to address and discuss their differences in a constructive dialogue, KoSSev reports.
“Contribute to the progress of society! Express your opinions calmly and seek compromises!”, KFOR said on its Facebook page.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana also spoke shortly before the KFOR mission.
He said that he had spoken to the EU Special Envoy for Dialogue about the tense situation in northern Kosovo.
“Both Belgrade and Pristina must show restraint and prevent escalation.” “KFOR remains ready and prepared to intervene if stability is threatened,” this NATO official said.
A new number plate crisis is under way in Kosovo. The Kosovo government has decided to gradually implement its spring decision to remove the remaining Serbian plates of cities in Kosovo from vehicles on the ground. This is opposed by Belgrade and Srpska Lista, which claim that the KM plates remain, but at the same time claim that they would also agree to the KS plates.
International diplomats support the decision of the Kosovo authorities, indicating that it is part of the Brussels agreement, but they demand that Pristina suspend all actions for the next 10 months. However, the first stage – issuing warnings – is still ongoing, and earlier this week the Northern Region police and mayors announced that they would not enforce the decision. The Northern Region Police Commander was subsequently suspended.
The day after, Srpska Lista announced a meeting to decide whether there would be a suspension of the institutions.
The political and institutional representatives of the Serbs from the north of Kosovo decided to abandon the government in Pristina, the judiciary and all Kosovo institutions in the north, while at the same time imposing on Pristina the conditions that it must fulfil in order to return everything to the way it was before – to form a Association of Serb Municipalities and to draw a decision on the tables./Nova.rs/
