EU chief diplomat Kaja Kallas said that she was committed to the normalization process between Kosovo and Serbia because it was beneficial for both countries.
“If we can prove that we are moving in the right direction and taking steps towards normalization, leaving the past behind us and focusing on a common future, then I think it will be beneficial for both the people of Kosovo and those in Serbia,” Kallas said in an interview with Radio Television of Kosovo.
The EU chief diplomat also spoke about concrete steps she will take to restore trust in the EU as a fair partner and possibly lift the sanctions against Kosovo.
My opinion is: I listen to both sides. Both have valid arguments and criticisms, but I think we need to put the past behind us. As I promised or suggested, once Kosovo has a unified government, we need to sit down at the highest level and address the concerns, because we are really trying to overcome this obstacle. It is in the interest of the people of Kosovo. It would be much easier to really help the people here in all aspects if we normalize this process,” she said.
Meanwhile, commenting on her meeting with Serbian President Vučić, she said she had made her positions clear to him and called for those responsible for the attack in Banjska to be brought to justice.
“I have therefore made my position very clear and made it public. As far as responsibility is concerned, I have also addressed this issue and promised that those responsible for these attacks will be held accountable,” said Kallas.
When Kallas spoke about Kosovo’s future in the EU, he mentioned Estonia as a country where the situation was the same before EU membership.
“Let me give you an example: Estonia was in the same situation. Membership of the European Union required us to make some really difficult reforms. But it also required the willingness of the entire population to do this because it is better for our country, for our people, regardless of whether we are in opposition or in a coalition. And we did it,” said Kallas.
