The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has said the United States will impose sanctions on Russia after violating international law by recognizing the two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine as part of Russia.
Greenfield said this at an emergency meeting held for Ukraine at the UN Council.
“The United States will impose sanctions on Russia for this clear violation of international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We can, will, and must stand united in our calls for Russia to withdraw its forces, return to the diplomatic table, and work toward peace.”, said Greenfield.
Recall that the situation between Russia and Ukraine remains tense and tensions have increased after the recognition of the two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine made by Russia.
“I consider it necessary to take a decision that should have been taken a long time ago – to immediately recognize the independence and sovereignty of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said yesterday.
