Fierce fighting is taking place on Saturday northwest of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, and several other cities, while Russian troops have gathered 25 kilometers away from the capital.
During the night sirens were heard alerting residents to airstrikes.
Russia’s Defense Ministry says it has destroyed a Ukrainian air base near the city of Vasilkiv. An ammunition depot nearby was also said to have been destroyed.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that Russian forces had bombed a mosque in Mariupol, home to 80 people. Some of those in the mosque are thought to be from Turkey.
Several humanitarian corridors are scheduled to open on Saturday, providing residents with a safe passage to escape violence in Kiev, Sumi and other regions.
Russia has expanded its war in Ukraine by targeting areas in the west of the country and appears to be regrouping troops near Kiev. These developments come as the United States and its allies are stepping up sanctions against Moscow.
A senior U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of intelligence provided by Russia, said Russia had begun striking in western Ukraine, as well as military airfields in Lutsk and Ivano-Frankivsk on Friday.
