The European Union has imposed sanctions on two Russian media operators, RT and Sputnik.
This is due to Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine, which has been under way for almost a month.
The interpretation of the war in Ukraine is a topic that is constantly addressed, as certain media may have intentions to disinform about the situation in Ukraine.
Russian-sponsored media outlets, particularly RT and Sputnik, have described Putin’s crime as a “special operation” since the start of the war in Ukraine, as he himself claims it is.
On the EU vs Disinfo platform, the reasons for imposing these sanctions on the Russian media have been published.
The European Union calls RT and Sputnik “weapons of deception”.
“The European Union has adopted sanctions against the Kremlin’s weapons of deception: Sputnik and RT. Their broadcasting activities were urgently suspended (opens in a new tab)in the EU, until the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine is put to an end and until Russia ceases to conduct disinformation and information manipulation activities against the EU and its Member States.”, it is said on the statement.
Among other things, the EU says that although RT and Sputnik may seem like international media, they are not. This is because their function is not that of a media, that maintains objectivity and reports impartially. On the contrary, these media directly serve the Kremlin propaganda.
“RT and Sputnik may look and sound like international media outlets, but they are not. They function with one overarching goal: to facilitate and support the Kremlin’s policies abroad(opens in a new tab) with means of disinformation and information manipulation. RT and Sputnik and their social media offshoots aim to exacerbate fragmentation and polarisation and undermine democracies, obfuscate facts of the Kremlin’s violations of international law, and manufacture support for Putin’s war.”
Recall that the Russian aggression in Ukraine began on February 24th this year. Russia’s attempts to distort this invasion have been ongoing. Sanctions against Russia continue. / TheGeopost /
