Milorad Dodik’s international isolation is becoming clearer, and Konakovic emphasizes that the EU is preparing a meeting for BiH actors to which the president of RS will not receive an invitation, but will receive new sanctions.
Milorad Dodik’s international political isolation is becoming more and more evident by the week. Several EU Member States have already imposed sanctions against the President of Republika Srpska.
It is almost impossible to expect sanctions from the Union level due to the opposition of certain member states, first and foremost Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as well as Slovakia led by Robert Fico.
However, the Bosnian Foreign Minister gave indications that the Union could exclude Dodik from talks on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s European path.
The European Union is preparing an important meeting in Brussels, which will be attended by all political leaders except Milorad Dodik. He is no longer an ally or associate of anyone. Look at his behaviour after the sanctions were announced. This man expelled the German minister from Banjaluka at gunpoint and by force. He is threatening to ban Slovenian ministers from crossing into the RS. He has announced to take over the borders of BiH, Elmedin Konakovic told BN TV.
Konakovic also reminded of the message from the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, that Dodik is no longer a negotiator for official Brussels. She emphasized at the end of March that “Dodik will not be a interlocutor when discussions about solutions for BiH take place.”
Dodik is the politician who is currently preventing the normalisation of the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and preventing it from doing what is necessary. This means that a politician with secessionist tendencies, who is against European integration, does not respect the order established by the Dayton Agreement, and is usurping rights that do not belong to him, and of course cannot contribute to securing BiH’s European path, Kos stated.
Dodik is currently under sanctions by five EU Member States – Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany and Austria.
Dodik can no longer talk to anyone. He is no longer a negotiator for the EU. Konakovic is convinced that sanctions from several EU countries will follow, which will punish him drastically.
Sanctions are an attempt to isolate Dodik, points out Faris Kocan, a university professor in Ljubljana, writing in Oslobodjenje. He believes that this is also an attempt to show the citizens of the RS entity a clear picture that it is no longer an actor with which the international community wants to cooperate.
Signal to citizens
It is the international community that legitimises or delegitimises moves both at the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the Western Balkans region. It would also be good if a front were created by these countries to give a clear impression that Dodik is no longer desirable in connection with any negotiations on the future of BiH, especially in the context of European integration. This is also a signal to the people to persist or continue to support such policies that could have a negative impact on Republika Srpska, especially in view of the financial difficulties that this entity is facing, Kocan believes.
However, Kocan does not expect Dodik to change his approach even when it becomes clear that his way of conducting politics is affecting the welfare of the people. Citizens, and the opposition too, will have to say – enough. Dodik and the SNSD will certainly continue to use citizens as human shields in the fight to protect their personal interests.
