The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, said that Serbia will not listen to the United States of America and recognize Kosovo.
At the celebration of America’s Day in the Serbian Parliament – an event organized by the Congress for Serbian-American friendship – Dacic said that anyone who tries to pressure Belgrade to recognize Kosovo will not succeed.
“Such an approach to the issue of resolving the situation in Kosovo will never succeed. We have signed the Brussels Agreement and continue to be a constructive partner in the dialogue”, said Dacic, Beta agency reported.
Dacic did not mention the wars and genocide caused by Serbia in the Balkan region and complained that there have been no visits to Serbia by the leaders of the USA and the United Kingdom.
“When was the last time an American president visited Serbia? Many of us were not even alive. The last British Prime Minister to visit us was Margaret Thatcher. They have visited all other countries, do you think they don’t visit Serbia because it is not strong? No, how can we have a partnership relationship with countries that are not in our interest”, he said.
Dacic, who is known for his nationalist policies, made this statement despite having reached an agreement with Kosovo where he recognizes its de facto independence, showing once again that they will not fulfill it even though it is an international agreement.
Dacic, who was a spokesman for the war criminal Slobodan Milosevic, had spoken openly against the West for the support it has given to Ukraine even in 2015.
He had accused Western democracies of hypocritically pressuring Serbia to join sanctions against Russia by increasing their trade with Moscow.
Speaking at the European Parliament in Brussels, Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said that Serbia does not want to sacrifice its relations with its traditional ally, Russia, on its way to the EU.
“Serbia is moving towards the EU, but we also have our friends like everyone else in the world. What would it look like to do something against our friends to join a new association?”, he said.
Following Russian support for separatists in Ukraine, the EU imposed sanctions against Russia in 2014. Even then and now that Russia has launched a full-scale war against Ukraine, Serbia has not aligned its foreign policy with the West and imposed sanctions on Russia. .
Currently, Kosovo demands that an eventual agreement at the end of the process include mutual recognition, while Serbia aims to reach a compromise solution – without elaborating on what kind of compromise it is. /Geopost/
