German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said that Germany will ensure that the European Union freezes funds and bans the entry of those responsible for the violent suppression of anti-government protests in Iran.
“Those who beat women and girls in the street, who abduct, arbitrarily imprison and condemn people to death, stand on the wrong side of history. To the vulnerable people in Iran, we say: we stand with you and we will continue to do so,“ Berbok told Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
Germany, France, Denmark, Spain, Italy and the Czech Republic have submitted 16 proposals for new EU sanctions against Iran for suppressing protests caused by the death of young woman Mahsa Amini in custody, Reuters reports citing a source in the German Foreign Ministry.
Sanctions should be adopted at the EU foreign ministers meeting on 17. October in Luxembourg, and proponents do not expect EU member states to object to the text of the sanctions.
Anti-government protests in Iran began last month, after the death of a young Iranian woman of Kurdish origin, Mahsa Amini (22), who was detained by the morality police, for allegedly violating the rules of wearing a hijab.
Amini fell into a coma a few hours after her arrest and died on the 16th September in custody./Nova.rs/
