Batricevic: Downhill has started for Russian-Serbian players in Montenegro

“The great state storm of the ‘Russian-Serbian world’ showed its teeth on the barricades in Cetinje. “From that moment on, the cars for the local Russian-Serbian players are going downhill and it seems that instrument after instrument is slowly slipping out of their hands,” said historian Boban Batricevic, a professor at the Faculty of Montenegrin Language and Literature in Cetinje, on the eve of May 9, Europe Day, which will be held in Belvedere, at the entrance of the Montenegrin capital Cetinje.

Those barricades, on which the former government “showed its teeth”, took place on September 4 and 5, 2021, before and during the enthronement of the Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, Joanikije, in the Cetinje Monastery. This act was opposed by the people of Cetinje, but also by many citizens from all parts of Montenegro, considering it an insult and provocation that the metropolitan belonging to another Serbian Orthodox Church be enthroned in the Cetinje Monastery, where the relics of St. Peter of Cetinje, a Montenegrin saint, are buried, but also the secular ruler of Montenegro from the Petrovich Njegosh dynasty, at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

With the help of the police and the army, respectively by the decision of the Government, headed by Zdravko Krivokapic, the Metropolitan of Joanikije and the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) Porphyry, they were brought to the Cetinje Monastery by military helicopter. The approaches to the Monastery were blocked by the police, and there were conflicts with the citizens of Cetinje, and tear gas was used to disperse them.

On the eve of the Victory Day at the Belvedere, historian Batricevic emphasizes that the war in Ukraine exposed relations in the world and opened new perspectives for observing events behind us, and that, as he says, the veins of malignant Russian influence that have spread beneath the surface are now completely pointed to the European continent.

“Observed from the angle of Montenegro, the events related to the enthronement of the pro-Russian and Greater Serbia-oriented Bishop of the Church of Serbia Joanikije Micovich in Cetinje on September 4 and 5, 2021 are only part of the southwestern branch of peripheral Kremlin activities.

It was immediately clear to those who have been closely monitoring and recording the performance of pro-Russian and pro-Serbian structures in our country in recent years that Montenegro was their target in September, Batricevic estimates.

“The special operation of denazification of Ukraine, which is now being conducted by Russia, could very easily have been the ‘Anti-terrorist special operation’ of Montenegro, in a slightly different form – the civil war.

The spontaneous, tenacious and flawless resistance of unarmed citizens to this act prevented the total sinking of Montenegro into the Russian-Serbian intelligence-political mud.

He emphasizes and recalls that under the pressure of the previous government of Zdravko Krivokapic, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the strong engagement of Russian-Serbian propaganda points, there was an intention to criminalize the events from the Cetinje barricades, i.e. to declare peaceful protesters terrorists, but the opposite happened that part of the police was connected with criminal groups which, on the eve of the enthronement of Metropolitan Joanikije, threatened to “come to Cetinje and make a new Srebrenica”.

That is why, says Batricevic, it is important to go out on Belvedere again!

“One government was overthrown by Belvedere, the treacherous one, let him send a clear message to this government that there is no trade with Montenegro!”
