An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of unknown origin was found in Turkey, less than a day after another suspected Russian drone was downed in the northwest of the country, Turkish media reported on Saturday.
According to independent TV networks and the Cumhuriyet newspaper, the drone was discovered in an empty field near the city of Balikesir, roughly three hours southwest of Istanbul.
Turkish authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but broadcasters Halk TV and Haberturk reported that the drone was transported to Ankara for further analysis.
Some media outlets, citing local farmers, said the crash may have occurred several days ago. This marks the third such incident since Monday, at a time when Turkey has warned Russia and Ukraine against allowing their ongoing conflict to spill over into the region.
Turkish authorities have pointed to Russia regarding a drone discovered last Friday near the city of Izmit, approximately 30 kilometers south of the Black Sea. The UAV is suspected of having conducted attacks on ships in recent weeks.
The Turkish Interior Ministry, which has opened an investigation, stated that the drone “is believed to be an Orlan-10 type, manufactured in Russia and used for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes, according to initial findings.”
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned that the Black Sea could become a “zone of confrontation” between Russia and Ukraine, which are located on opposite shores of the sea bordering Turkey.
