Network for destabilizing Moldova busted, trained in Serbia for Russian interests

The latest case uncovered by the Moldovan authorities, where over 30 people are being prosecuted for preparing mass riots, is not simply an isolated criminal case, but shows signs of a well-organized operation, which according to the investigation data is based on a training scheme abroad and is linked to Russia's broader strategy to destabilize Moldova.

Evidence collected by the Moldovan General Inspectorate of Police (IGP) shows that these individuals had gone through a training camp in Banja Koviljac, Serbia, under the supervision of foreign instructors.

This detail is important because it suggests a structured organization, with prior preparation and logistical support from outside Moldova.

Serbia is often used as a transit point or training ground in hybrid operations that combine propaganda, paramilitary training, and recruitment. In this context, Moldova seems to be targeted as a geopolitical weak point: a small state, politically divided, and exposed to Russian influence, especially through the Transnistria region.

According to the IGP, the group had been operating since last year with the clear intention of inciting violent protests and creating mass disorder. The objective was to create social tensions that would undermine public security and damage Moldova's political stability.

This method coincides with the well-known tactics of Russian hybrid operations, where local actors, paid or manipulated, are used to incite social discontent, create clashes, and legitimize political or propaganda interventions.

Raids reveal links to Russia

During more than 50 searches, law enforcement seized material that solidifies suspicions of a Russian-funded network. In addition to communication equipment, simulated weapons, and coordination tools, authorities found bank cards issued by Russian financial institutions, foreign currencies including Serbian dinars, and over 20 biometric passports with entry stamps in Serbia. These elements suggest not only training abroad, but also financial and logistical resources linked to broader pro-Russian networks.

This case is seen by analysts as part of Russia's ongoing efforts to maintain influence in the post-Soviet space, especially at a time when Moldova seeks deeper integration with the European Union. Internal destabilization would be a convenient instrument to weaken the pro-Western orientation of the Moldovan government.

The case of these individuals trained in Serbia is not simply a criminal chronicle, but an alarm signal for a Moldova that is under real risk of destabilization. The evidence so far speaks of a well-structured operation, synchronized with Russian interests in the region and aimed at undermining the country's peace and political orientation.

The investigations are expected to deepen, as Moldova faces the challenge of protecting itself from foreign influences that aim to turn it into another scene of geopolitical tensions./TheGeopost.
