South Korea and Japan announced yesterday (Wednesday) that North Korea has conducted a test of a missile that appears to be ballistic.
The missile was launched from an area inland toward its eastern coast, according to senior South Korean military officials. Japan's coast guard also said the missile could be ballistic.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called the test "unacceptable." He said his government would strengthen its vigilance and oversight more than ever and was currently conducting a detailed and urgent analysis.
No further details were provided regarding the test, including the type of missile or the distance it traveled and where it landed.
The test comes just days after Pyongyang leader Kim Jong Un's year-end speech, which focused on domestic economic problems rather than military advances.
This is Pyongyang's first test since October, when North Korea tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
Pyongyang has frequently tested short-range ballistic missiles since mid-2019, shortly after the failure of nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang leader Kim Jong Un and former US President Donald Trump.
