The Netherlands will be the first donor to NATO's new arms financing mechanism for Ukraine, called the "Priority Request List for Ukraine" (PURL), with a payment of 500 million euros ($578 million), the Dutch defense minister said on Monday.
"Ukraine now needs air defense and additional ammunition. As the first NATO ally, the Netherlands will deliver a package of American weapons systems worth 500 million euros (including parts and missiles for the Patriot system)," Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said in a statement posted on X.
"This helps Ukraine defend itself, as well as the rest of Europe, against Russian aggression," he added.
A statement posted on the Dutch Ministry of Defense website said other countries had also pledged financial support under the new mechanism.
The ministry said that under the new scheme, Ukraine could use US military supplies if they were financed by NATO allies. The US is providing military aid in packages worth approximately $500 million, they said, adding that the packages include air defense equipment, ammunition and other key supplies tailored to Ukraine's needs.
US President Donald Trump said last month that the US would provide Ukraine with weapons funded by European allies, but did not specify how this would be done.
Reuters reported on Friday that NATO members, Ukraine and the US are developing a new mechanism to finance weapons for Ukraine.
