While the former Deputy Prime Minister of the Serbian Government and one of Belgrade's biggest propagandists, Aleksandar Vulin, is in Russia, Russian media have broadcast his statements about the so-called "American militarization of Kosovo."
Vulin has compared the situation in Kosovo to "Chekhov's Gun", warning that it will definitely go off, a metaphor he used to describe, according to him, the danger the West poses to Serbia through the preparation of forces in Kosovo.
In an interview with the Russian agency RIA Novosti, Vulin said:
“If a rifle is hung on the wall in the first act of a theatrical performance, in the third act it will definitely fire. If you give weapons to Kosovo Albanians in the first act, they will definitely fire in the third act. The threat to Serbia does not come only from the militarization of Kosovo – the country is surrounded by enemy NATO member states. There can be no army in Kosovo, except for KFOR, or UN or NATO forces. That is all. Currently there are the so-called Kosovo Security Forces. This is an army. The army that the West has armed.”
Vulin's statements have been published by several Russian portals, including Rambler and Sputnik, and come at a time when tensions between Belgrade and Pristina remain high, while Serbia often uses the Kosovo issue for domestic and international propaganda.
Situation analysis
Many experts and international sources deny Vulin's claim.
The West has not militarized Kosovo, as it claims. KFOR (Kosovo Security Force under NATO command) is an international peacekeeping mission deployed in Kosovo since 1999, tasked with ensuring peace, stability and freedom of movement for all communities in the country.
This mission is not offensive in nature and is not intended to threaten Serbia. Source / NATO
The Kosovo Security Forces (KSF) are a civilized and peaceful institution.
They assist authorities in emergency situations, participate in international missions, and are separate from any kind of military strategy against Serbia.
The KSF also has international partnerships, such as the one with the Iowa State National Guard in the USA, through the "State Partnership Program", which aims at civil cooperation and strengthening peaceful capacities.
Serbia has a long history of using the issue of arming and strengthening the KSF for propaganda.
Similar statements about the "threat to Serbia from Kosovo" have also been disseminated by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić this year, attempting to keep public opinion under tension and create the perception of a direct external danger.
Political analysts assess that Vulin's statements are part of a deliberate disinformation campaign, which uses the rhetoric of fear and the history of regional tensions to achieve political goals in Serbia, presenting Kosovo as a direct threat to Serbian national security, despite the legal and military reality on the ground.
