The Serbian media outlet "Kosovo Online" has misinformed the state of Kosovo through a daily cartoon regarding drugs in the country. This media outlet, which broadcasts news in Serbian but also in Albanian and English, aims to present Kosovo as a country involved in drug crime.
And this is not the first time that "Kosovo Online" has tried to misrepresent Kosovo in this regard. It has done the same before.
What message does the cartoon convey?
In a cartoon, "Kosovo Online" displayed the flag of Kosovo with a slightly deformed map and a 'joint' underneath it.
Analyze:
This media outlet, both through articles and cartoons, misinforms that Kosovo is a drug state where laws do not work and that there are drug cartels. By doing so, it tries to say that there is no legal system for these activities as part of its goals to discredit the state of Kosovo.
But this is not true. Kosovo is a safe country, according to international reports, and the Kosovo Police has proven effective in preventing drugs and fighting organized crime. In May 2021, the Kosovo Police confiscated 400 kg of cocaine from Brazil. The cargo entered Kosovo from Albania (through the port of Durrës) and was hidden in a truck. During the search of the homes of the persons arrested in connection with this case, weapons, ammunition and other items were also seized.
The Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) together with the Italian Embassy in Kosovo had organized a conference where it was stated that in such a context, the intensification of information exchanges between law enforcement agencies of all countries affected by the phenomenon of international drug trafficking appears as one of the most effective means to combat this phenomenon.
Also, Kosovo's legislation is harsh in combating this phenomenon and possession or trafficking of drugs usually carries a long prison sentence. /G.Venhari-The Geopost/
