The Novosti portal has once again attempted to misinform the public, spreading claims by the Russian secret service about a so-called “Maidan” in Serbia. The article talks about an attack on students “who want to learn” and an alleged attempt to cause chaos in Belgrade by protesting students.
What Novosti wrote:
"In the square in front of the People's Assembly, a group of thugs attacked the camp of students who want to learn, hitting them with bottles, sticks and torches - with the obvious intention of causing chaos."
As early as mid-September, the SVR announced that the European Union and its member states 'are preparing a scenario of a left-wing revolution in Serbia, using student movements and youth as a means to cause unrest,' Novosti writes.

Analysis:
In their report, Novosti claims that a “group of thugs” attacked the “student camp 2.0” (also called “Chacilend”) with bottles and sticks. While the incident in front of the Parliament did indeed occur, independent media reports and previous events showed that it was a clash between opposing groups in a politically polarized environment, and not a so-called unilateral terrorist attack as presented in Novosti.

Brussels also officially rejected the Russian accusations, referred to by the Novosti portal, on September 15, calling them “Russia’s attempts to spread disinformation and hostile political rhetoric against the EU.” Students launched the protests themselves, demanding accountability for the tragedy and a solution to the broader social crisis.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) on September 15, 2025 published a statement accusing the European Union and its member states of preparing a "color revolution scenario" or "Serbian Maidan" in Serbia, using student movements, non-governmental organizations and the media, with the aim of putting "crooks obedient to Brussels" in power.
Also, media and media freedom organizations warn that independent media in Serbia face pressure, while pro-regime tabloids often accuse student and civic protests of foreign manipulation without concrete evidence.
Student and civic protests in Serbia began after the tragedy in Novi Sad on November 1, 2024, when 16 people died after a roof collapsed at the railway station. The protests began with demands for political and criminal accountability, and later expanded into broader social and political demands.
On the other hand, there is also evidence where independent media reported on clashes, where officials of the Serbian Progressive Party were identified among the provocateurs, who obstructed protests and caused violence by posing as students.
