The director of the "Office for Kosovo" in Serbia, Petar Petkovic, claimed on Wednesday (July 23) that, by order of the Agency for Property Verification (AKKVP), a Serbian family was evicted from an apartment in North Mitrovica, which "they bought, but it was unjustly taken from them by an Albanian." However, the Agency said otherwise, which is why they also published documents through which Petkovic was denied.
What did Petkovic say?
By order of the AKKVP, the Janičević family, consisting of a single mother with two children, were evicted the day before from an apartment in North Mitrovica, "which they had bought, but which was unjustly taken from them by an Albanian"... Many Serbs living in northern Kosovo face such problems.
Analyze:
The Kosovo Agency for Property Comparison and Verification (KAPV) has publicly denied Petkovic's claim, explaining that: the apartment in question was owned by an Albanian citizen, who was registered as the legitimate owner before the war, through documents from the Kosovo Housing Agency.
The Janičević family lived in that apartment without a legal basis, and the decision to return the property was made on the basis of property documents and enforceable decisions, which are part of the post-war process for returning property to its legitimate owners.
The AKKVP published the documentation proving the ownership of the Albanian citizen, to counter Petkovic's media manipulation.
What does the AKKVP response say?
The AKKVP implements the final decisions of legal institutions, while the restitution of properties is done through regular legal procedures “and is applied to any illegal usurpation, regardless of the ethnicity or status of the party”.
Statements such as this one by Petar Petković incite tensions and undermine the rule of law and coexistence, when it is known that the return of property is a problem that Albanians and Serbs have been facing since the post-war period.
