At his annual press conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov once again used the opportunity to spread propaganda and disinformation about alleged Western pressure on Serbia. He claimed that the United States and the European Union are allegedly asking Serbia to “betray” Russia.
What Lavrov said:
The US and the EU are shaking hands with Serbia, asking it to betray Russia. The administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden wants to harm Serbia and the administration of Donald Trump.
Analyze:
Lavrov misinforms that the United States and the European Union are forcing Serbia to give up Russia. Thus, Lavrov tries to convince the public that supposedly “the United States and the EU are making efforts to punish Serbia for its relations with Moscow.”
In fact, the Biden administration is not concerned with internal political games in the US, nor is it using Serbia as a tool for political calculation; on the contrary, the US and the EU expect Serbia to respect sanctions against Russia.
Lavrov also ignores the fact that Serbia is balancing relations with Russia and its European aspirations. According to data from the European Commission, Serbia has for years received the largest financial support from EU funds, including assistance for reforms, infrastructure and education, which is in complete contradiction to Russian narratives about Western “pressure.” /The Geopost/
