Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has spread misinformation that supposedly member states of the European Union and NATO “have united to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia.” As he claimed, this is “to start a war against Moscow through the Nazi regime in Kiev.”
Lavrov made these propaganda claims in a video message shown at the eighth global forum of young diplomats.
What did Lavrov say?
"This should not be forgotten especially today when irresponsible calls are heard from Berlin to make the German army the strongest on the continent again and when almost all EU and NATO members have joined in an attempt to inflict a strategic defeat on our country," he said.
As Russia's war in Ukraine continues, Lavrov has tried to camouflage the truth by saying that supposedly "Moscow will actively work to shape a more just world order based on the principles of the UN Charter."
Analyze:
The member states of the European Union and NATO have not united “to defeat Russia” – as Lavrov claims in his narrative, but to defend Ukraine from Russian military aggression, which began on February 24, 2022.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has stressed that NATO is not a party to the conflict and that it aims to support Ukraine in its right to self-defense.
While Lavrov accuses the West of “fighting Moscow,” he simultaneously speaks of “building a just world order in accordance with the UN Charter.” This is a selective use of international principles, since Russia has itself violated Article 2 of the UN Charter. So, this whole narrative of victimizing Russia is intended to distract the West from the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. On the contrary, the EU and NATO are helping an independent state that is a victim of Russian military aggression.
