The spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, disinformed that European law was violated in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which voted on the report recommending Kosovo’s membership in this organization.
What did Zakharova say?
“Self-proclaimed Kosovo is not ready for membership in the Council of Europe. Voting for the so-called Kosovo is a disgrace for the Assembly, which has reaffirmed its commitment to the violation of international legal norms and the destruction of the foundations of interstate relations in Europe. “It should be emphasized that self-proclaimed Kosovo is completely unprepared for membership in the Council of Europe and has no right to do so, since according to the statute only independent states are admitted to this organization, which Kosovo is not,” said Zakharova.
Analysis:
An extraordinary majority of members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted in favor of the report stating that Kosovo meets the requirements for membership of the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe is an international organization whose aim is to protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. Zakharova thus falsely informs us that the Assembly violated European law when it recommended that Kosovo’s citizens join this organization, which has access to the European Court of Justice and whose rights are protected. The many MEPs who supported this report also argued that the rights of minorities in particular would be better protected.
Zakharova also disinformed when she says that Kosovo is not ready to become a member of the Council of Europe. After the Council of Europe accepted Kosovo’s application, it sent some respected lawyers to the country to assess the functioning of democracy in Kosovo. Their report stated that Kosovo met all the conditions for membership and had a functioning democracy. Kosovo has also pledged to fulfill all its obligations required by membership of the Council of Europe.
