The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, falsely informed on Wednesday that Kosovo had observed the positions of the Serbian army from Gjakova with Bayraktar drones. He even mentioned the Swedish-German planes, which he said were “photographed from other areas that were not under the control of the Serbian army, but photographed due to the presence of Serbian security forces.”
What Vucic said:
Vucic said Serbia needs to change many of its habits and invest more in military preparedness:
“The Serbian army’s equipment and weapons are being modernized, we are not satisfied with the number of people, especially in northern Serbia, Belgrade and Vojvodina.” We are facing many challenges and, for various reasons, large forces are concentrated in the region.
What we have noticed is that the actions of manned and unmanned aircraft as well as drones in the area with reconnaissance purposes towards Serbia, without crossing the border of Serbia, have increased from all directions towards Serbia. We have seen Albanian “Bajraktars” taking off from Gjakova to observe positions of the Serbian army and Swedish-German planes taking pictures from other areas not under the control of the Serbian army, but taking pictures due to the presence of Serbian security forces. We will continue to accelerate and need to change our habits, work harder and better and clarify our message to contain possible aggression. We need to increase the manpower in the army, but not in the secretarial positions, but in those who carry guns and can help the country.”
Analysis:
The Serbian president is using accusations against neighboring countries as part of his broader propaganda strategy while misleading the Serbian public that the key to peace supposedly lies in the creation of an ever stronger Serbian army.
Vucic provided no evidence for his claims. He misinformed about the Bayraktar drones and Serbian-German planes in order to increase tensions and justify his country’s military activities.
Vučić is investing in the army at the expense of other important sectors such as health and education.
Vučić’s accusations and his rhetoric about military weapons are intended to distract from current issues in Serbia and stir up fear in the region. The aim is also to create a climate of fear and mistrust towards the West. Such statements, which portray Serbia as a victim of international conspiracies, are also aimed at creating unity among the Serbs.
