The Serbian newspaper “Informer” has spread misinformation in an article published on March 12 addressed to Sweden after its accession to NATO, claiming that the country is preparing an attack.
What did “Informer” write?
“Uproar in Sweden, they have just joined NATO and are already preparing for a Russian attack!” It is the most important point in Europe. Sweden is ready to strengthen the defense of the most important island in the Baltic Sea, which could become Russia’s main target in a possible conflict with NATO and Russia. Gotland’s and Sweden’s membership of NATO changes the whole equation. This means that strategic control over the Baltic Sea would return to NATO. This is a problem that Russia understands very well. Sweden has already announced plans to send a combat battalion to Latvia, which is only 200 kilometers from Finland.
Analysis:
Sweden has decided to join NATO after the Russian attack on Ukraine, which has caused uncertainty in Sweden, and not to plan a Russian attack, as the Serbian propaganda newspaper claims. Sweden joined NATO on March 7, two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced the country to rethink its national security policy and conclude that supporting the alliance was the Scandinavian country’s best guarantee of security.
When Foreign Minister Antony Blinken received Sweden’s accession documents from Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, he said that “everything has changed” after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and pointed to polls showing a massive shift in Swedish public opinion in favor of NATO membership.
“The Swedes have understood something very profound: If Putin was willing to wipe a neighbor off the map, he might not stop there,” Blinken said./G.Venhari-The Geopost/
