Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has misinformed that the West is preparing destabilization in Serbia, calling it the resumption of efforts by “certain malevolent forces” to undermine the domestic political situation in Serbia. Zakharova made the disinformation statements following Serbia’s agreement with the EU on lithium and protests by environmentalists in the country.
What did Zakharova say?
Some pseudo-democratic circles are cynically trying to turn citizens’ natural concern for the environment, especially their demanding attitude towards mining projects in the interest of developing the national economy and improving people’s well-being, regardless of costs and risks, into a protest movement. .
We are talking about the notorious scheme that has been repeatedly applied in the Balkans (and not only) by the Western ideologues of “democracy of the region” and their local successors. The idea is to stir up negative emotions in society with good intentions through puppet media and NGOs and incite them against the state leadership in the hope that the authorities will lose their composure and control over the situation.
We consider such tactics destructive and irresponsible. Abuses of this kind, especially under the current turbulent conditions, pose a direct threat to Serbia, jeopardize the ongoing efforts of the President and his Government to ensure the sustainable development of the country and the well-being of its citizens, and hinder the implementation of an independent and principled course both domestically and internationally.
Analysis:
Zakharova has attacked the West following the agreement between the EU and Serbia, which provides for the construction of a lithium mine. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had said in Belgrade that the Jadar project was a good thing for the citizens of Serbia and that the entire project would be implemented in an environmentally friendly manner and according to European rules.
Zakharova is misinformed when she says that the protests in Serbia were instigated by the West against the government in Serbia. Protesters in Serbia oppose it because some citizens and activists are convinced that the mine would have serious consequences for the environment. Moreover, most opposition parties in Serbia are against lithium mining. However, the West is not instigating protests because it considers the agreement important because of lithium, which is used as a raw material for electric cars.
Although Russia has misinformed in the past that the West is fomenting destabilization in Serbia, which has never happened, Russia’s ally Aleksandar Vucic has confirmed that they have received official information from the Russian Federation and are analyzing it. “Those who dream of achieving something by force will fail,” Vučić continued, rhetoric similar to Zakharova’s./The Geopost/
