The director of the “Office for Kosovo” in Serbia, Petar Petkovic, claimed on Wednesday (July 23) that a Serbian family had been evicted from an apartment in North Mitrovica on the orders of the Property Verification Agency (AKKVP). He said that although they had ‘purchased’ the apartment, it had been “unlawfully taken away from them by an Albanian.” However, the agency claimed otherwise and published documents refuting Petkovic’s claims.
What did Petkovic say?
On the orders of the AKKVP, the Janičević family, a single mother with two children, was evicted from an apartment in North Mitrovica the day before. Although they had “purchased” the apartment, it had been “unlawfully taken away from them by an Albanian.” Many Serbs in northern Kosovo face such problems.
Analysis:
The Kosovar Agency for Property Comparison and Verification (AKKVP) has publicly denied Petkovic’s claim, stating that the apartment in question belonged to an Albanian citizen who was registered as the legal owner in documents issued by the Kosovar Housing Agency prior to the war.
The Janičević family lived in this apartment without legal basis, and the decision to return the property was made on the basis of ownership documents and enforceable decisions that are part of the post-war process of returning property to its rightful owners.
The AKKVP published the documents proving the Albanian citizen’s ownership in order to counter Petkovic’s media manipulation.
What does the AKKVP say in response?
The AKKVP implements the final decisions of the legal institutions, while the return of property takes place within the framework of regular court proceedings and “applies to every illegal usurpation, regardless of the ethnic affiliation or status of the party.”
Statements such as those made by Petar Petković fuel tensions and undermine the rule of law and coexistence, even though it is well known that the restitution of property is a problem that Albanians and Serbs have faced since the post-war period.
