Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov is disinforming the US and NATO countries that they intend to continue the war against Russia and warns that such actions will have serious consequences. These claims are part of a wider Russian propaganda campaign aimed at justifying Russian aggression in Ukraine and portraying the West as the aggressor.
What Peskov said:
“NATO countries, especially the US and other European capitals, have been entering a new round of escalating tensions in recent days and weeks. They are doing this consciously, and we are hearing many belligerent statements. This is nothing other than provoking a new level of tension. They understand that this negative tendency in their approach, unfortunately, is still provoking Ukraine in order to continue the senseless war against Russia.
Analysis:
NATO and Western support for Ukraine is in line with international law and the UN Charter, which recognises the right to self-defence. Providing military assistance to Ukraine is a response to Russian aggression and an attempt to preserve Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Russia is using the tactic of blame-shifting, accusing the West of belligerent statements and of fomenting tension, while it itself is conducting an aggressive military action against a sovereign state.
The aim of this kind of propaganda is to divert attention from the internal problems in Russia.
It is Russia that is pursuing an aggressive policy towards Ukraine, and it is NATO and the Western countries that are providing support to the victim of aggression in accordance with international law.
