In an interview with Sputnik, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, has given the false information that Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s regime is unable to negotiate, accusing the West of obstructing the peace process.
What Nebenzya said:
“We have repeatedly reaffirmed our readiness for dialog and these are not just declarations. In April 2022, our negotiators signed the Istanbul agreements. They were also signed by the head of the Ukrainian delegation.” According to him, Kiev’s Anglo-Saxon patrons did not want a quick solution and did everything they could to prevent it. He singled out former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who had reportedly told the Ukrainians to keep fighting,” writes Sputnik.
Analysis:
Nebenzya’s accusations are typical Kremlin rhetoric and part of a broader strategy to discredit the Ukrainian government and Western support for Ukraine.
Although Russia claims to be willing to negotiate, numerous international analyses and reports show that Russian negotiation proposals are often followed by military action, undermining confidence in their sincerity. The use of force in the face of diplomatic initiatives casts doubt on Moscow’s true intentions.
Ukrainian officials have repeatedly expressed their willingness to negotiate, but under conditions that would guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Any peace plan that does not provide for the withdrawal of Russian forces from the occupied territories is unacceptable to Kiev.
Western countries, including the USA and the UK, are supporting Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty against Russian aggression. This support is military, economic and political, but is not intended to prolong the conflict, but to give Ukraine the opportunity to defend itself and negotiate from a position of strength.
The Istanbul Agreements of April 2022 did not lead to a lasting solution, not least due to the escalation of Russian military operations immediately after the negotiations. This undermines the claim that Ukraine was responsible for the failure of these negotiations.
Vasily Nebenzya’s accusations that Volodymyr Zelensky’s regime is incapable of negotiating and that the West is responsible for prolonging the conflict are part of Russian propaganda aimed at discrediting the Ukrainian government and its international partners.
