The Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, has made the next slander from Moscow against the NATO-allied armed forces and their exercises. At a meeting on national security issues, he falsely stated that the NATO exercises “Steadfast Defender 2024” were being held in preparation for a war with Russia.
What did Patrushev say?
“During the ongoing training of NATO forces in Europe, a scenario of armed confrontation with Russia is being worked out, which increases tensions and destabilizes the situation in the world. The alliance is preparing for new wars. The exercises of NATO’s joint forces in Europe called “Steadfast Defender 2024″, in which the scenario of an armed confrontation with Russia is being developed, are certainly increasing tension and destabilizing the situation in the world. There are plans to further expand NATO’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and in the Arctic. In 2024, the projected military spending of NATO countries continues to rise, once again underlining the growing aggressiveness of the alliance.”
Analysis:
Patrushev’s statements are clearly Russian propaganda since it really is the exact opposite of it. The Steadfast Defender 24 exercise is based on NATO’s new defense plans and demonstrates NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy forces from North America and other parts of the Alliance to strengthen Europe’s defenses. So these exercises are being conducted to strengthen NATO’s defense capabilities, not to attack.
NATO’s purpose is to ensure the freedom and security of its members by political and military means. NATO promotes democratic values and enables its members to consult and cooperate on defense and security issues in order to solve problems, build trust and prevent conflict in the long term.
