Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has disinformed on the intentions of a peace conference planned for Ukraine in Switzerland, stating that the West wants to defeat Russia and that this is an ultimatum.
What did Lavrov say?
The conference has long been discussed by all those who are trying to defeat Russia on the battlefield, without rejecting diplomatic methods, as they say. However, their diplomatic methods (the conference in Switzerland is not an exception, but merely a continuation of the process in the Copenhagen format) amount to formulating an ultimatum to Russia. If the West wants to fight on the battlefield (as they say), it is welcome. The Finnish president said again that the Swiss conference is important, but it must defeat Russia in war and weaken it so that it is no longer a threat.
Analysis:
Switzerland has planned to host a high-level peace conference in Ukraine in mid-June. After agreeing in January to host a peace summit at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Switzerland has announced that an international conference is planned for June 15-16 at a hotel near Lucerne in central Switzerland. After an exploratory phase that included lobbying and consultations with various states to explore options, the Swiss government said in a statement that the conditions were in place for the conference to launch a peace process. “The first step is to develop a ‘common understanding between the states involved with the aim of achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine’,” the Swiss government said. So the aim of the conference is to create a forum for high-level dialog on ways to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, and not, as Lavrov disinforms, for states to meet to work out plans to defeat Russia but bring peace to Ukraine.
