The portal Sputnik Serbia has disinformed, using the statements of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, to justify Russian aggression against Ukraine and portray the West as the main enemy of Russia’s “spiritual identity”.
What Cyril said:
“The Western world is constantly provoking an escalation that threatens to develop into a direct conflict between the two worlds. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which is constantly being fueled from outside, is the biggest external threat to the Russian world.”
The Western world, accustomed to long-term cultural hegemony, is not ready to recognize the right of our and other civilizations to identity and, in particular, to independence.
Literally a bone in the Western world’s throat? It’s about the values that we hold on to and that form the foundation of our spiritual identity.”
Analysis:
The Sputnik Serbia portal reported on Moscow Patriarch Kirill’s statement accusing the West of attacking the spiritual values of the people of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus in order to justify Russian aggression in Ukraine and promote the idea of a “civilizational war” against the West.
Patriarch Kirill, as head of the Russian Orthodox Church, is using his religious authority to legitimize the Kremlin’s political and military goals. Sputnik reports this without any critical scrutiny and thus further reinforces the propaganda narrative of a holy war against the West.
This creates a distorted picture in which the aggressor is the West and the victim is Russia.
Sputnik’s report makes no mention of Russian war crimes in Ukraine, massive human rights violations or international condemnation of the occupation. Instead, the focus is on religious and cultural narratives to justify the war.
