The International Football Federation (FIFA) has launched an investigation against the Football Federation of Serbia over a banner hung in the national team’s dressing room before the match against Brazil, which declared Kosovo as part of Serbia. A photograph taken in the Serbian national team’s dressing room with the Serbian flag within Kosovo’s borders and the words “No surrender” also drew a reaction from Hajrula Ceku, Kosovo’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport.
The shameful images from the Serbian changing room convey messages of hatred, xenophobia and genocide towards Kosovo during the World Cup. I expect concrete action from FIFA, given that the Football Association of Kosovo is a full member of FIFA and UEFA – announced Ceku.
The International Football Federation (FIFA) Disciplinary Committee has opened an investigation under Article 11 of the Disciplinary Regulations and Article 4 of the 2022 World Cup Regulations into the flag that was in the dressing room before the match against Brazil, the international football federation has announced.
The Kosovo Football Federation, a member of the umbrella organisation since 2016, has also responded.
The World Cup is an event to spread joy and unity and to send messages of hope and peace, not hate. We ask FIFA to take action against such acts.
