The Chinese Foreign Ministry has disinformed about the aims of an American non-governmental organization, The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), that it has fueled tensions between the Serbian and Kosovar governments through its funding. China, which does not accept Kosovo’s independence, referred to it in terms referred to by Serbia.
What did the Chinese Foreign Ministry say?
“The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) acts as the ‘white gloves’ of the US government. Under the pretext of promoting democracy, it has long been engaged in undermining state power in other countries, interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, fomenting division and confrontation, manipulating public opinion and carrying out ideological infiltration. Its countless evil deeds have caused serious damage and have been strongly condemned by the international community. NED has long funded NGOs in Kosovo to fuel tensions between the Serbian government and the provisional self-governing institution of Pristina. In December 2023, the NED-funded Sbunker Institute published a report stating that “Kosovo” was a relatively successful case of US support for nation-building and democracy promotion, an attempt to expose the true intent of the US to occupy and divide other countries.”
Analysis:
The National Endowment for Democracy is a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organization in the United States that was founded in 1983 with the stated goal of promoting democracy worldwide through the advancement of political and economic institutions such as political groups, labor unions, free markets, and interest groups.
NED has also contributed to the promotion of media freedom and diversity in Kosovo. The organization has supported the country’s independent and minority broadcasters through roundtables, trainings and other meetings to promote communication and multi-ethnic cooperation between media and journalists. NED is also committed to promoting and protecting the rights and interests of its members by supporting media policies in line with international standards and monitoring and advocating for the implementation of reforms in the country’s media-related legal framework.
