The Russian ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandar Bochan Harchenko, has circulated conspiracy theories about an alleged hybrid war against Russia while accusing the West of trying to force the resolution on Srebrenica. His statements, which fuel fear and distrust of the West, are part of a wider Russian propaganda aimed at justifying Russian interventions and destabilizing the region.
What Bocan Harchenko said and the Večernje Novosti portal reported:
“Russia’s ambassador in Belgrade, Aleksandar Bocan Kharchenko, said tonight that the West is trying by all means to postpone the resolution on Srebrenica. It is partly a global policy, and as far as Russia is concerned, it is part of a hybrid war against our country, to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, to deprive the people of their dignity and bring them to their knees. It is an attack on the preservation of sovereignty.”
Analysis:
Harchenko’s claims lack any basis, as the resolution on Srebrenica represents an attempt to face the past and recognize the victims of genocide, and not, as he claims, a distortion of history. Moreover, accusations that a “Western minority” is imposing its own rules ignore the fact that Western values are the basis of the international order and respect for human rights. Harchenko’s remarks should be understood as part of a broader Russian propaganda campaign that seeks to justify Russian aggression and destabilize the region.
Harchenko points to efforts to distort history, especially when it comes to the role of Serbia and Russia, which also points to Russian efforts to destabilize the region. Studies and analysis by international organizations such as NATO and the EU show that it is Russia that is actively engaged in hybrid operations including disinformation, cyber-attacks and propaganda to undermine Western democratic processes. With this misinformation, Harchenko seeks to rewrite history to justify Russian aggression in Ukraine./The Geopost/
