European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a "credible transition" in Iran on X, contradicting the joint statement of EU Foreign Ministers, who did not share US and Israeli aspirations for regime change.

Below is the entire second day of coverage following developments in the Middle East, following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, while difficult negotiations over the country's nuclear program continue.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for regime change in Iran in a post on X.
The post appears to signal a shift in the European Commission's stance on Iran, the first time the EU's executive body has explicitly supported regime change in Tehran.
“The risk of further escalation is real. That is why a credible transition in Iran is urgently needed,” von der Leyen wrote. She added that such a transition would pave the way for a lasting solution and reflect “the democratic aspirations of the courageous people of Iran.”
It is the first statement from the EU executive supporting regime change in Iran. Previously, the US and Israel signaled that military strikes on Iran could pave the way for the overthrow of the existing regime.
The Iranian theocracy oppressed civilians and violated human rights, with a religious Supreme Leader overseeing all aspects of life. The supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in an airstrike on Saturday.
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that his Federal Government shares the "relief" of many Iranians that the "mullahs' regime" may be coming to an end.
