US President Donald Trump has said the United States is in "serious discussions" with a new regime in Iran, suggesting that a potential deal could lead to the end of US military operations in the country.
In a post published on the Truth Social platform, Trump stressed that "great progress" has been achieved in these talks, but warned of serious consequences if an agreement is not reached in the short term.
"Great progress has been made, but if for some reason a deal is not reached soon, which it probably will be, and if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately 'open for business,' we will end our pleasant 'stay' in Iran by blowing up and completely destroying all of their power generation plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island (and possibly all of their desalination plants!), which we have deliberately not 'touched' yet," he wrote.
Trump added that these actions would be taken in retaliation for, according to him, "many of our soldiers and others" who he claims have been killed by Iran over the past few decades.
"This will be in revenge for the many of our soldiers and others that Iran massacred and killed during the old regime's 47-year 'reign of terror,'" his statement further said.
Trump's statements come at a time of high tensions in the Persian Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most important global routes for oil transportation, and any escalation of the situation could have far-reaching consequences for international security and energy markets.
