Pentagon: US military ready to implement any Trump decision on Iran

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on Thursday that the United States military is ready to implement any decision that President Donald Trump may make regarding Iran, in order to prevent Tehran from pursuing the development of nuclear weapons.

Hegseth's statement came at a time when a significant US military presence has been amassed in the region, significantly increasing tensions between Washington and Tehran. During a cabinet meeting, President Trump himself asked Hegseth to comment on the current situation and the readiness of the US military.

"They should not pursue nuclear developments. We will be prepared to provide whatever this president expects from the War Department," Hegseth said, referring to the Trump administration's unofficial renaming of the Defense Department.

According to US officials, President Trump is currently considering his strategic options, but has not yet made a final decision on whether the US will launch a direct attack against Iran.

Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated after clerical authorities brutally cracked down on protests across Iran in recent weeks. The protests, fueled by economic hardship and political repression, were met with a heavy-handed crackdown by Iranian security forces, prompting strong reactions from Washington.

President Trump has repeatedly threatened to intervene if the Iranian regime continues to kill protesters. However, the demonstrations have gradually faded in recent weeks.

Trump has also warned that the United States will act if Iran resumes its nuclear program, following June airstrikes by Israeli and US forces that targeted Iran's main nuclear facilities.

On the other hand, Iranian authorities vowed on Thursday a "devastating response" to any possible attack by the US or its allies, further deepening the threatening rhetoric between the two countries.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that a "massive armada" is moving towards Iran and that Washington's "next attack" would be "much worse" than the US bombing of Iranian nuclear and military facilities carried out last June.

"As with Venezuela, the United States is ready and able to swiftly accomplish its mission, with speed and violence, if necessary," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

American media reports indicate that the situation is being closely monitored at the White House.

CNN reported early Thursday morning that Trump is considering the possibility of "a major new attack," which could include strikes on Iranian leaders, government institutions and the country's nuclear facilities.
