The European Parliament has expressed deep concern about Serbia's role in Russia's hybrid and destabilizing activities in Europe, assessing that Belgrade has become an important operational point for the activities of Russian intelligence services.
The Resolution on Serbia, adopted by MEPs, states that there are "credible reports" that Serbia has been used as a center for activities related to hybrid interventions, organizing provocations, and inciting ethnic and religious tensions in European Union member states, as well as in neighboring regions.
The European Parliament calls on the authorities in Belgrade to investigate, prevent and prosecute any activity aimed at destabilizing European and regional countries.
The document emphasizes that Russian influence in Serbia constitutes a challenge to European security, while MEPs express concern about the use of Serbian territory as a base for the activities of foreign intelligence services.
Criticism of military cooperation with China
In the same Resolution, the European Parliament also criticized Serbia's military buildup and its defense cooperation with China.
MEPs particularly condemned the recent purchase of Chinese CM-400AKG air-to-surface ballistic missiles, warning that such armament could affect the security balance in the Western Balkans and damage neighbourly relations with NATO member states.
According to the European Parliament, this military supply contradicts the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and raises serious questions about Serbia's strategic and geopolitical orientation.
The resolution also notes increased security cooperation between Belgrade and Beijing, including joint special forces exercises, strategic agreements, and the use of Chinese security and surveillance technologies.
The European Parliament assesses that Serbia, due to its position in the region, has a special responsibility for maintaining stability in the Western Balkans and demands from the Serbian authorities a clearer definition of their strategic orientation towards the values and policies of the European Union.
