Croatian investigative journalist Domagoj Margetić has published official documents from the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague, which, according to him, shed light on Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s claims regarding the so-called “human safari” events in Sarajevo during the 1990s war.
Vučić has repeatedly stated in public declarations that the Hague investigations never confirmed any evidence of “sniper tourists,” calling the claims about this phenomenon “lies” and “fabrications.” However, according to the document released by Margetić, these statements are false.
The document, numbered 0603-2373–0603-2383, originates from official ICTY hearings held on August 22, 23, and 24, 2006, during the testimony of American witness John Jordan, a firefighter and U.S. citizen. The investigators present at the sessions were Barry Hogan, Manoj Sachdeva, and Gabor Nagy.
In the document, officially recorded in the ICTY files as a “Witness Statement” under the title “Jordan Gjoni – 24-8-06. dok/md,” Jordan describes “intentional and targeted killings of children as trophies” and refers to “foreign sniper tourists who came to Sarajevo to target civilians.”
Margetić emphasizes that this document provides additional evidence challenging Vučić’s statements, arguing that the Hague investigations documented clear cases involving foreign snipers during the siege of Sarajevo.
“This document shows that the claims by certain politicians that no sniper tourists existed are inaccurate,” Margetić told Croatian media.
Analysts and historians in the region suggest that the publication of these documents could reopen debates about responsibility and narratives concerning crimes against civilians during the Sarajevo siege—a topic that remains sensitive and contested among Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia.
