The new US administration has brought about a change in approach to Ukraine and forced Europe to rethink its commitment to Kiev.
Among the countries considering support for Ukraine is Italy. The country has proposed the establishment of a military mission similar to KFOR in Kosovo.
“Italy is proposing a solution for Ukraine along the lines of the Kosovo force – a UN mission, but under NATO leadership,” writes ‘Huffingtonpost.it’, citing sources in the Italian government.
This idea is being considered as part of possible negotiations between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
Giovanbattista Fazzolari, Undersecretary of State in the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, also made it clear that Rome would base its next steps on several guiding criteria.
According to “Huffingtonpost.it”, an intergovernmental summit is to be held in London on March 2 to discuss the creation of a joint fund between the European Union and the United Kingdom to cover rising defense costs.
Regarding the deployment of troops before a peace agreement is reached, Italy stated that this is not currently planned.
Meanwhile, the UK and France are leading efforts to build a European “security force” of around 30,000 soldiers to provide protection in the event of a ceasefire with Russia.
According to the Guardian, this force would focus primarily on air and sea defense and avoid deploying troops near the eastern front line.
On the other hand, The Times reports that American intervention in the form of air support would be a key element of this plan to prevent ceasefire violations by Russia.
However, it remains unclear whether this initiative is acceptable to Ukraine or meets with consensus in Moscow. /Telegrafi/
