European Union (EU) Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos told N1 that the demands of protesters in Serbia are the same as the EU’s demands on Serbia on its path to Europe. Commenting on the conversation, the director of Telekom and the director of the United Group stated that no economic or political pressure on the media is good for democracy.

As she said, the European Union is concerned about the events in Serbia because it wants Serbia to be strong on its European path and is therefore ready to help our country meet the conditions necessary for EU membership.

“Being a member and a candidate brings responsibility and commitment on both sides. My role as Commissioner for Enlargement and that of the entire European Commission and the European Parliament is to be ready to help, because we all believe that Serbia has a future in the European Union,” she told N1.

On the other hand, she stated that things must change in Serbia.

When asked whether she could trust the Serbian authorities and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who calls members of the European Parliament scum, she replied:

“I trust the Serbian people. The Serbian people have shown their protests and they are the ones who can change the system and bring about democratic processes. This trust is very important. The greater the trust, the easier it is for people to understand why reforms are necessary. In this sense, the European Union is gaining the trust of Serbian members. Many of your people’s demands are the same as our demands on Serbia on its European path. And that is why I would like the Serbian people to see us as an ally that can help them achieve what they want.”

Speaking about the media in Serbia, she said that it is very important for state institutions in Serbia to create opportunities for journalists to work normally and for people to receive information, and to help them in this.

She also stated that people do not have enough information about Serbia’s integration into the EU.

“In Serbia, we need to see a transformation of the process of change, and leaders have a very important role to play in this by prioritizing daily politics over the necessary reforms. When they speak out against Europe, when they participate in military parades in Moscow or Beijing, this influences public opinion, not only at the level of ministers and prime ministers, but also among citizens.”

Commenting on the conversation between Telekom CEO Vladimir Lučić and United Group CEO Stan Miller, she stated that no economic or political pressure on the media is good for democracy./Nova.rs/
