Iranian female journalists Saeeda Shafiei and Nasim Sultanbeigi have been sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison each for participating in the Freedom Life Women protests. Shafiei wrote in a tweet on July 31 that the Revolutionary Court had charged her and Sultanbeigi with “assembly and collusion” and “propaganda activity against the regime.

“Shafiei additionally announced that her other co-defendant, female journalist Mehrnoosh Zarei, was acquitted.

The sentences come amid continuing protests for women’s rights sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in September 2022. To read the original story from Radio Farda./REL/
